Arizona Envirothon 2007
Alternative/Renewable EnergyForestry Links
This year's Envirothon theme, "Alternative/Renewable Energy," involves forestry and trees at many levels, for example:
- Trees can serve as alternative and renewable fuel for producing energy
- There are lots of trees out there to burn right now for energy
- But trees aren't inexhaustable to burn infinitely into the future without some planning for sustainability
- Forest soil nutrients might be depleted due to biomass harvesting
The goal in studying for this year's Envirothon topic should be to become proficient with both basic knowledge of Arizona forestry issues and specific knowledge on human use of forests and trees. For example, modifiying the 2007 national learning objectives pertaining to forestry in Arizona:
- Identify species commonly found in Arizona wildlands resources, e.g., tree species and basic ecology of forests, rangelands, and deserts.
- Be able to describe the goods and services that healthy ecosystems (urban and non-urban) provide us humans. In other words, know why it's important to even bother concerning ourselves with environmental issues such as forestry.
- Give an example of using forest biomass for energy production and discuss the pros and cons of this strategy.
Three types of information are linked from this site:
- Other web sites: Various webs sites that focus on forest resources of Arizona and on the issue of forest, rangeland, or desert conservation. Also included here are web sites dedicated to the topic of forest biomass for alternative energy production
- Selected scientific articles:
- The chosen articles are mostly short (<10 pages of text) and readable by high school students.
- The articles are pdf files, for which Adobe Acrobat is required to read and print them. Acrobat is available from this link.
- Because of copyright limitations, the pdf files are password protected; if you don't otherwise know the password, please write me for it.
- Selected newspaper articles: The chosen articles are from the Arizona Daily Star and are permanent html sites.
