Alternative/Renewable EnergyNewspaper Articles
When considering a complex environmental issue such as alternative/renewable energy, it's helpful to have command of real-world examples. Newspapers cover this issue, giving examples of burning forest biomass to generate power on a large-scale basis. Here's at least one to start with:
- Wood-fired power plant for E. Arizona Biomass plant being built in E. Arizona: This 2007 Arizona Daily Star news clip announces a plan to burn wood from the Rim to generate power for general use by residents. Sounds like a great idea, but can you discuss the pros and the cons of this idea?
- Experts look to timber as next generation energy source: This 2007 Minnesota Public Radio news clip discusses a plan to burn wood from MInnesota's great North Woods (lots of trees!!) to generate power for general use by residents. Again, sounds like a great idea, but once again, can you discuss the pros and the cons of this idea?
- Botanist: Restore fire-resistant longleaf pines, get clean energy: This University of Florida news clip says the same thing as abovereduce wildland fire hazard by thinning the woods and then use the cut trees to generate electricity. Corroboration of ideas is a strong arghument.
- Small pines fuel state's wildfires, aren't just junk: This 2003 Arizona Daily Star news clip talks about how to use small trees that have taken over Arizona forests.
- Biofuel production leads to cooperation: This 2007 Arizona Daily Star opinion piece extols the positive side-effects of international diplomacy from countries using non-oil based fuels for energy and transportation. Don't miss the comments attached at the bottomgood debate fodder.
- Corn ethanol won't solve our energy needs: This 2007 Arizona Daily Star opinion piece says not so fast on expecting corn ethanol to meet all our energy needs. Don't miss the many comments attached at the bottomyet more debate fodder.
- U.N. Raises Doubts on Biofuels: This news clip says not so fast on biofuels, because of "serious environmental problems."
