Current Projects

I am a second year master's student in the Department of Geography and Regional Development. I have just joined the CLIMAS (Climate Assessment of the Southwest) team for my research assistantship. I am currently involved in the following research projects, and past research experience is listed in my curriculum vita.

project title:      Managing Flash Floods: Risk Perception from a Cultural Perspective

advisors:           Dr. Katie Hirschboeck, Dr. Marv Waterstone, Dr. Stephanie Fryberg
(University of Arizona), and Dr. Eve Gruntfest (University of Colorado at
                        Colorado Springs)

description:      This project aims to discover how cultural and social contexts influence risk                         perception and behavior, focusing on the decision to cross or not cross a
flooded roadway or wash. The study fuses theories in risk perception, risk                         communication, cultural and social psychology, and decision science.

I will be conducting a workshop with flood risk managers from many levels and                         backgrounds to discuss the possible utility of such information in flood mitigation                         here in Tucson.

If you would like to participate in this workshop, please visit the project website                         for more information and to sign up for the workshop. I look forward to                         working with you!

funding:            This project funded through grants from The Climate Assessment for the                         Southwest (CLIMAS) and The Social and Behavioral Sciences Research                         Institute (SBSRI).

project title:      Flood Hydroclimatology for Arizona, 1950-2005

advisor:            Dr. Katie Hirschboeck

description:      This project extends a previous hydroclimatology (1950-1985) through 2005
that identifies trends in flood regimes for different regions of Arizona. I am
currently analyzing daily weather maps to categorize peak stream flows                         by the type of storm that produced them for each USGS stream gage in Arizona.

funding:            This project is funded through a grant from The Climate Assessment for the                        Southwest (CLIMAS).
