Preparation for Group Activity 1 (GA1) Friday, Jan. 27
For
the group activity on Friday you will be self- and group-learning about raw
materials, including key chemical elements, needed for the energy-saving,
pollution-reducing devices necessary to improve sustainability of our society.
Prior
to Friday’s Group Activity, you need to spend 1-2 hours researching your
element in terms of the questions to consider below (web or library; don’t
chase useless web information- you might be more likely to find useful
information at sites with “.edu” and “.gov” extensions, but amazingly Wikipedia has some helpful
information about the composition of gizmos or their components).
You can see your group and your assigned
element in D2L content (Unit 1) and on the course web page ("group
list" link). Bring your notes to
class on Friday and your group will collectively use all of your information to
complete the group activity. You will
turn in a page of your notes (with sources) or a few printed web pages of
relevant information on Friday at the end of the activity (make sure your name
is on each page you turn in).
[NOTE: If you miss Friday’s GA1, the make-up will have
a different device than your group was responsible for on Friday]
What components/parts make up
your device?
What raw materials are needed
to manufacture you device?
What metals must be mined to
provide the raw materials for your device?
How and where are those
metals mined?
What environmental or health
problems are associated with the mining or manufacturing of those metals?
